January has been very mild so far for the usual seasonal conditions and this may bring some later flowers forward.  Please check back throughout the month for updates on current availability.

Elder provides some of the earliest foliage interest.

This is the earliest of our willows to bear catkins

Clear apple green, bare winter stems with tiny purple bud scales provide a striking contrast of colour. Scales enlarge to form mahogany sheaths from which emerge neat, sleek, shining white ‘cotton wool’ buds with touch of pink behind the white.

In water – buds expand to form ‘pussy willow’ catkins of strokeable silver grey. Anthers then open in shades of purple, red or yellow,

Suitable for both hand-ties and arrangements.

Stem length:

Longevity:  Outstanding – will keep for several weeks out of water as long as in a cool damp place and over a week in water.  Note that placing in water will cause catkins to develop into further stages – timing will depend on warmth of room.
